Elizabeth Howe

"In 1692 Elizabeth was in Lancaster at the house of Peter Joslin, who married her sister, when the Indians attacked the house, murdered the family, and carried her into captivity, where she remained three or four years, when she was ransomed by the Government, and restored to her friends. Governor Phips sent for her, and inquired why she had not been redeemed much earlier, stating that he had sent several times to have the captives purchased or exchanged. She replied "that if she had been a beaver skin she would have been redeemed much earlier," meaning that if he took quite as much interest in his own affairs and fortunes as in protecting or relieving their Majesty's subjects. When she was captured, she was abut to be married; her intended (Thomas Keyes), considering her lost to him forever, resolved never to marry; but on her return repented of his folly. They were married 23 June 1699 and moved to Shrewsbury, where he d. 1742. She had acquired many of the habits and usages of the Indians, and retained them for some time and it is said that she never fully recovered from the fright of her capture."
