Hinrich Lage1
M, b. circa 1600
Hinrich died at Schönberg, Germany.2 He was a farmer. "Across the waters from the United States of America, Started the beginning of the Lage family, who eventually came to America. From the northern part of the Probstei area of Schleswig Holstein, Germany, as far back as I can go started the decendents of the Lage's. Beginning in the 1600's the first known Lage was Hinrich, a Halbhufe in Schonberg. A Halbhufe means half farm or small farmer as "hufe" means farmer. This small farm belonged to Hinrich Lage and his decendents. Around 1631 the next generation started with his son, Hinrich Lage II, who also farmed in Schonberg. Around 1676 Hinrich ZII started the next generation with a son named Claus Lage, also a Halbhufe in Schonberg. Claus Lage married Elizabeth Jessien, whose father was Adam Jessien of Schonberg. To this union were born: Peter, Hinrich, Gretje, Beck, Elizabeth and Hans. Of these Kinder [children], Peter became the next one to carry on our family. Peter Lage, a Katner in Schonberg, born around 1680 in Schonberg, married Abel Schlapkohl, in Schonberg, October 10, 1705. Abel died 15 February 1720, and Peter then married 2nd wife Trin Arp 24 January 1721, who also was born in Schonberg, daughter of Claus Arp. She died in Schonberg 9 November 1759. Peter died 8 January 1738. Peter and Abel's children were: Claus, Hinrich, Peter and Hans. Peter's children with 2nd wife, Trin Arp were: Thomas, Asmus, Lisabeth and Wulber. Out of all these children Thomas was the one to start our next generation. He was born 6 November 1721 in Schonberg. Like his father, Peter he was also a Katner. He married Silke Stoltenberg 23 October 1750 in Schonberg. Silke was born around 1718 and died 17 October 1783. Thomas died 12 January 1790. To this union were born, Peter, Jochim, Trinke, Beck and Silke. Jochim was the child to carry on the family history. He was also a Katner in Schonberg, born 25 March 1754. He married Antje Lage, in Schonberg, 16 November 1782. She was born 23 August 1760, to Claus Lage and Abel Wiese and died 7 December 1840. The children of thisfamily were: Jochim, Silke, Abel, Antje, Thomas, Claus, beck. Thomas of this family was the one to carry on. Thomas was an Einwohner in Krummbek, born in Schonberg, 20 October 1790, and married in Schonberg, 8 February 1817 to Abel Schlapkohl, daughter of Hans and Ester [Stoltenberg] Schlapkohl. Abel was born 26 September 1792 and died 8 May 1848. Thomas died in Krummbek 25 February 1837. Their children were: Jochim, Hans, Antje, Esther, Claus, Hinrich, Thomas and Antje. This was not uncommon for them to name two children in the same family the same name if the first one died when a child. Of all our generations the Jochim of this family was the one to come across to the United States and start our generations over here. Jochim Lage married Catherine Speth, 19 October 1850 in Schonberg Germany. Catherine was the daughter of Iven Speth and Antje Arp. Six of their nine children wre born in Germany and migrated to this country, with the parents. They were: Annie, Lena, Frederick, Gustave Adolph, Johannas N. and Herman. Theodore, Amelia and Henry wre born in this country."
