John Trott
M
"Trott, Tratt and Treat family in England, for six generations, as best one could from the scanty probate, manor and parish records available. There are doubtless some errors. The family traces back without any difficulty for four generations to Richard Trott. Beyond that point there is a difficulty. There are no parish registers befor 1538 and no sources of information. There is a calendar, not complete however, quite well preserved from 1450-1666 but in the present condition of the records it is utterly useless. It would require months of search and great expense to find the documents indexed. Have given all names of Trott found in the calendars between 1450 and 1573 in order to show the authority, in the absence of direct proof, for regarding John and William Trott as the founders of the family they being the only Trotts in Taunton Manor and their names having been common ones in the family. The names are in Latin: John, William, Richard and Robert.
The name of Trott has been adhered to in this pedigree because it is the oldest form of the name, though Tratt is often found in the records.
JOHN TROTT, of Staplegrove, near Taunton was probably the grandfather of Richard Trott from whom we can trace our line of descent without any difficulty. His name occurs in the calendar of the Taunton Manor Rolls, 1458, 1463, 1473 and 1479. He was probably the father of William Trott."

(no date in body of the document, but in later hand written on 17 Nov. 1607) The Bill (i.e. petition: wording badly worn away on one edge)
Roger Greswold of Kenilworth yeoman says that about March 44 Eliz 1602/3 there was... between him on one part and Thos Braband, Anne mother of the said Thomas then wife of Thomas Hart, the same Thomas Hart, Richard Holmes and Alice on the other part, Certain closes or fields called Broomfields and other lands then in their possession to be purchased by Roger Greswold deceased father of the petitioner.
The lands were entailed to the heirs male of William Greswold deceased.
There was an arbitration before Sir Thomas Leigh. The petitioner "being in great necessity and need of money" showed the award to one Thomas Greswold who was then about to buy the lands.
He alleges that Roger senior had thought wrongfully that the land was not entailed and sold it to Thomas Braband and Co.
The reply is that the defendant's father John Brabonde bought the property from Roger senior deceased.
He was a yeoman. Roger was born circa 1542 at England.1 He was the son of William Griswold and Elizabeth NN----. He married an unknown person circa 1568.1 Roger Griswold was present at George Griswold's christening on 6 November 1574 at Wooten Wawen, county Warwickshire, England.2,3 Roger died before 1605.1

William Griswold is the first of the family we can be sure of for the emigrants, Edward and Matthew. Five know children were born to him. The order of their birth is taken from the will, which lists males first, then females, each in order of birth. The were probably intermixed, and Roger could have been anywhere from second to fifth.
