Samuel Beck

M, b. 1756 or 1759, d. after 25 March 1821
Samuel Beck was born in 1756 or 1759 at Duck Creek Hundred, Kent, Delaware.1 He was the son of Samuel Beck. Samuel Beck married Mary Ellen Farson, daughter of William Farson and Susannah Spruance, in 1788. Samuel Beck Samuel appears as a member of the 3rd Company, 3rd Regiment, of the Delaware Militia in 1799 and 1800. In 1795 Samuel petitioned the Orphan Court of Kent County to divide the estate of Mary’s father. In 1810 Samuel and Mary sold their rights to the 190 acres that had belonged to Mary’s grandfather, Henry Farson. William Ford purchased these rights for $100. The Following year, Samuel and Mary acquired for the same price the right to 117 acres, her mother’s portion of the Spruance inheritance, by buying out Mary’s sister and brother.
In 1814 the entire Beck family, including married children, moved to Ohio in search of cheaper farmland. Ohio been opened to settlement in 1800, and land could be purchased from the United States Government at $2 per acre. The Indians and Iroquois nation were generally friendly by this time and had been pushed further west by the land-hungry pioneers. The last Indian tribe signed a treaty in 1817 and went on reservation. In 1842 all the Indians were removed from Ohio and settled in the west.
The Beck’s journey to Ohio was very difficult. Since there were no roads, railroads, or ships, the pioneers either walked, rode horses, or traveled in small wagons. The National Road, constructed by the federal government, did not reach Ohio until 1818. The trip led through forests, where only narrow trails were available. Under these primitive conditions, it took the Becks about 40 days of strenuous travel to cover the 400 miles between Delaware and Ohio.
Samuel and his family settled in Freeport Township, Harrison County, Ohio. In June 1814 Samuel purchased 160 acres from John Cooper for $1050. He farmed this land-the southwest quarter of section 14, T12, R7 of the Steubenville District. On 29 September 1814, he also received a land patent from the federal government for an additional 160 acres, the northeast quarter of section 11, page 3, T11, R7. For this 2nd 160 acres he paid $320, the terms were $80 down and $80 each year for 3 years. Sam Beck died on his farm in Harrison Co. He was survived by his wife and 5 minor children. As executor of his will had chosen “My trusty friend and well beloved son William Beck. between 1795 and 1821. He died after 25 March 1821 at Freeport Township, Harrison Co., OH; Will dated 25 Mar 1821.
