The word Horton is Anglo-Saxon and means an enclusure or garden of vegetables, and is said to have been derived from ort, a plant, and tun, enclosed. In olden time the name was frequently written Orton.

The antiquity of the family of Horton is established by the fact that Robert de Horton manumitted a bondsman to his estate of Horton previous to 1310, and it is also ascertained that the Hortons had a manor house in Great Horton, with a mill and certain lands thereto belonging, at a very remote period.

David, like his brother Israel, was a large land owner in Southold, and was probably one of the wealthiest men in the community where he resided. He appears to have been of a more retiring disposition than his brother and took a less conspicuous, if not less active part in the affairs of the town. He also appears as a private in the Southold Militia, in 1715. His will dated 24 January 1726, and proved 16 March 1726 is as follows:

"In the name of God, Amen. The 24th day of January, in the year of our Lord 1726, I, David Parshall, of Southold, in the County of Suffolk, and Colony of New York, husbandman; being very sick and weak in body bup of perfect mind and memory **** this my Last Will and Testament.

Imprimis: I give and bequeath to my eldest son, David Parshall, the one-half of my land that I now live upon. The outermost side and also the land one half of my undivided land with my eastermost piece of meadow ground at Sawmill Brook lying between Isreael Parshall on the east side and Joseph Brown the west side and my half of all the rest of my meadow ground.

Secondly, I will and bequeath to my youngest son Jonathan Parshall, the one-half of my land that I now live upon. The west half also the one half of my undivided land and my meadow ground not given before.

Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my youngest son Jonthan Parshall, sixty pounds in current money of New York, my will is that the said £60 shall be put to use at the discretion of my Executors while my said son shall come to the age of 21 years.

Fourthly, I give and bequeath all the rest of my estate after my lawful debts are paid unto all my children equally to be divided between them at the discretion of my Executors.

Further my will is that if any of my Daughters shall die before marriage then their part shall be divided equally between the rest of my daughters who are the survivors.

Lastly, I constitute and ordain my brother Israel Parshall, Samuel Swezey, and John Wells my only and sole executores of this my last Will and Testament.

John (Rev.) Youngs

M, b. 1597, d. 24 February 1672/73
The examination of John b. Yonge of St. Margaretts, Suff. Minister aged 35 yeares and Joan his wife aged 34 years with six children, John, Thomas, Anne, Rachel, Mary, and Joseph are desirous to pass to Salem in New England to inhabit. "This man was forbyden passage by the Commissioners and went not from Yarmouth". Indexes of Southold by Charles B. Moore esq. it is held that Mr. Youngs' attempt to emigrate from Yarmouth occurred 11 May 1637 as stated in a copy of the English record by Mr. Savage.

The next notice of him is in the New Haven record which states that he came ther in 1638 having passed through Salem where land was offered him which he declined. Notwithstanding refusal of passage, by the Commissioners of Emigration, he came to New England with his family very soon after the refusal.

At that period, determined purpose was not easily baffled, in the attempt to find an open field for the free exercise of religious duties, coupled with prospective freedom from hereditary rule.

The latter object is emphasized by the fact previously stated, that he was refused passage from Yarmouth. The reason for the refusal, not stated, was that he would not comply with conditions prescribed by government binding him to allegiance, after arrival at the place of destination.

In 1640, he was with his family in Southold, Suffolk County, L.I., NY, where he gathered his flock anew, and built the first church edifice in the State of New York, except perhaps the Dutch Church in New York City.

Liber A. of the town records begins with a description of the Pastor's home lot:
The Rev. Mr. John Youngs Pastor of the Church of Christ in Southold aforsaid, his home lot, with the meadow thereunto adjoining, contayning by estimation, seven acres more or less, bounded on the East with the highway leading to the head of the Creek, on the west with the home lot or Robert Akerly.

The wall which surrounds the Pastor's grave is substantial, and supports a massive horizontal, free stone slab, which bears the followin inscription:

"Mr John Youngs, Misister of the word and first settler of the Church of Christ in Southold on Long Island, deceased the 24 of February in the year of Our Lord 1671-2 and of his age 74"
"Her lies the man whose doctrine life well known did shew he sought
Christ's honouer not his own in weakness sown in power raised shall be.
By christ from death to life eternally."
